Origins and development
Vorwerk Cemetery opened with its first burial on 13 May 1907. Erwin Barth designed the grounds; an extension followed in 1926 to plans by Harry Maasz. Chapel 1 was built in 1908/1909; Chapel 2 opened on 6 December 1958.
The cemetery was established in 1907. The cemetery is in St Lorenz Nord, on Friedhofsallee, at Friedhofsallee 146, 23554 Lübeck. Its area is approximately 53 hectares.
Design and present-day character
Lübeck’s largest cemetery combines park-like burial areas, two chapels and war-grave areas of several nations. Entrances 1, 2 and 3 on Friedhofsallee lead to different destinations; establish the chapel number before attending a ceremony.
Read this character description together with the development of Vorwerk Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
